It’s the last day of the year 2017. The wintry day started with a piping hot mug of tea. My day doesn’t really start off without this one drink!! along with this quintessential hot drink I had purple yam harvested from my aunt’s garden. I had it simply boiled but I especially enjoy savoring it roasted and finishing it off right by the fireside in a cold winter day!
I am not so sure of the English names but it is a tuber that grows as a vine with heart shaped leaves. The plant bears small mini-tubers along the vines (aerial potato?). It also has clusters of flowers.
The purple yam (ha) is different from sweet potato (mangra). In Manipuri (meiteilon) we call it ‘ha’ and there are many a joke about its name which sounds similar to the expression ‘huh?’ (what?).
